Amazon Announces Kindle Fire, A Color Tab

Amazon just announced the Kindle Fire, which lets you do a whole lot more than read books. The company released a total of four new Kindle devices, that range in price from the cheap-as-dirt $79 Kindle to the would-be iPad killer the Fire. The Android-powered Fire is full color and only costs $199. It's a color tablet featuring book-reading, video playing, web-browsing, cloud-storage, a touch-screen, and because nothing can be announced without them, games. Examples given include Plants Vs. Zombies, Fruit Ninja, and, of course, Angry Birds. But there will be thousands of apps and games available, as any Android app will run on the thing. The Fire is designed to be smaller than an iPad with a 7-inch screen, and it also supports Flash, unlike the iPad. It has 8GB internal storage, but the bulk of your Fire storage will be cloud-based.That's the positive side. The negative side: The launch version of The Fire is Wi-Fi only, so no 3G for you early adopters. It doesn't have a camera, either, but I think Icould live without either of those features in exchange for that outrageously cheap price.Part of Amazon's strategy obviously revolves around the services the retailer offers as well. “This is an end-to-end service,” Amazon's Jeff Bezos said in his announcement presentation in New York City, touting not only the book store but the Amazon Prime video streaming service with an annual $79 subscription. So now that you know a bit about The Fire, what do you think? Would you buy this or an iPad?
